I have had Tinnitus for almost 20 years; actually since the age of 34. A friend and I attended a very loud (but good) rock concert and not too long after that, I developed a steady humming in my right ear. It was disturbing to say the least, but after about 9 months, I have to say that I got used to the sound. In fact, I actually forgot that I had Tinnitus most of the time. Fast forward to January of 2011...
returned from a wonderful vacation with my husband and friends I realized that I had a new sound along with the old sound only the new sound was much more annoying and louder than anything I had ever experienced. It seemed to change in loudness every day and every day that went by, I sank deeper into anger and depression with lots of crying in between. I grew to think that my life wasn't worthliving and many, many times I thought about ending it all. I was desperate. As time passed, I saw my GP who offered no help. Then I saw two separate Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists who told me "learn to live with it and there is nothing we can do". I went back to my GP who prescribed sleeping pills and sent me on my way. No one offered "I'm sorry for this condition you have, wish we could help", just "learn to live with it."
After searching the internet at different times during that first 9 months, I came upon a website for the Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic in Edina, Minnesota. I actually thought it was a scam... but I made an appointment and was
able to get in almost right away. After an appointment with Dr. Schwartz we decided upon the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment. I spent the next year wearing the Neuromonics device and along with that, a sound machine for sleeping, and intermittent appointments with Kathy at the clinic, I have to say that they saved my life. I am so grateful that there was actually something to help with the noise and I encourage anyone who reads this, to check out their treatment options. I had no idea that there really was any help for this condition.
My story is so much like all the others who have this horrible condition. Dr. Paula Schwartz and Kathy were my
angels and please know that there is hope. They have a very professional and caring staff and they will take
good care of you!
